At the Pavel Kolář Center for Movement Medicine, we perform densitometric examinations aimed at diagnosing bone density and early detection of osteoporosis or other conditions associated with bone loss. The examination is quick, gentle, and represents an important part of preventive and follow-up care for the musculoskeletal system.

What will you find out?

Densitometry helps determine bone strength, the risk of osteoporosis, and the likelihood of future fractures. A common examination focuses on the density of bone tissue in selected parts of the body, most often in the lumbar spine, hip, or forearm.

Whole-body densitometry scans the entire body at once and, in addition to bone density, provides information about the amount of muscle mass, fat, its distribution, and overall body composition.

Why order?

  • you will detect the risk of osteoporosis early,
  • you will gain an overview of bone strength and fracture risk,
  • with whole-body densitometry you can see the ratio of muscle and fat mass,
  • you will get more accurate information than just from a regular scale,
  • you can monitor changes in body composition during sports, weight loss or nutritional care,
  • The results can be the basis for further recommendations from a doctor, physiotherapist or nutrition specialist.
Specialization - Densitometry - Prague

What is densitometry?

Densitometry is a specialized test that measures the density of bone tissue and the amount of minerals in bones. This can help detect a decrease in bone quality before more serious complications, such as fractures, develop.

The examination is particularly helpful in diagnosing osteoporosis, monitoring the development of bone density, or checking the effectiveness of treatment. Early detection of changes allows for appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures to be set.

Whole-body densitometry expands the standard examination to include a more detailed look at the entire body. In addition to bone density, it also evaluates the amount of muscle mass, the amount of fat, the distribution of fat in the body, and overall body composition.

How is the examination carried out?

Densitometric examination is painless and time-saving. The measurement itself takes approximately 30 minutes.

During the examination, the patient lies on his back and needs to remain still for several minutes. The device then uses a very low dose of X-rays to measure the density of bone tissue. In the case of whole-body densitometry, it also evaluates body composition at the same time.

The examination does not require special preparation and after its completion, the patient can immediately return to normal activities.

When is densitometry appropriate?

We recommend the examination especially in the following cases:

  • Suspected osteoporosis or its long-term monitoring,
  • repeated or unusually occurring fractures,
  • long-term treatment affecting the quality of bone mass,
  • preventive check-up in older age,
  • sports, nutritional or weight loss program, where it is appropriate to objectively monitor body composition.

Contraindications to the examination

Densitometric examination cannot be performed in the following cases:

  • pregnancy,
  • X-ray examination with contrast agent in the last 7 days,
  • inability to remain still for several minutes while lying on your back.

Modern instrumentation

At our workplace, we use a modern bone densitometer from the Hologic brand, which provides very accurate and reliable measurement results. Thanks to the high quality of diagnostics, we are able to assess the condition of bone tissue in detail and recommend appropriate further care.

The device also allows for whole-body densitometry, which, in addition to bone density, provides an overview of the amount of muscle mass, the amount of fat, the distribution of fat in the body, and overall body composition.

Examination price
