A child may be able to read the board, have had an eye exam, and wear prescription glasses. However, they may still experience fatigue, headaches, or difficulty concentrating when reading, studying, or doing close-up work. They may miss lines, skip words, read slowly, or refuse to continue after a short period of time.
It is not appropriate to automatically attribute such difficulties to reluctance or lack of interest in school. The child is often unable to describe exactly what is bothering him. Instead of having difficulty focusing or coordinating his eyes, he will simply say that he has a headache, does not want to read, or cannot read anymore.
What could be behind the difficulties?
The cause may not be solely due to diopters. Prolonged visual strain may manifest itself in the following ways:
- improperly set or incomplete correction,
- hidden deviation of the eyes,
- difficulty focusing and switching vision between distances,
- weakened cooperation between the right and left eyes,
- lower ability to maintain comfortable binocular vision when tired.
It also makes sense to pay special attention to children after strabismus surgery. The surgery adjusts the position of the eyes, but the further functioning of their cooperation always needs to be evaluated according to the specific findings and recommendations of a specialist.
Vision examination in context
At the Pavel Kolář Center for Movement Medicine, we combine ophthalmological examinations with functional optometry. We monitor not only visual acuity and diopters, but also focusing, eye coordination, possible hidden deviations and the behavior of vision under stress. The goal is to understand why problems occur and to suggest further steps that meet the needs of a particular child.
